Summary of Events relating to the Leatherwork of the late Thompson Brothers
1900, During the early 1900's the brothers Thomas and Frank Thompson had established the business above, specialising as the name implies in producing goods decorated by hand tooling, embossing and colouring. From premises then sited between Bridge Street and In Town Row where now stands the Walsall Co-operative buildings, the business progressed and became well known throughout the leather goods trade.
1929, The business was moved to larger premises in Lime Street during 1929 and expanded with larger staff for many years, Thomas generally managing affairs and sales while Frank the artist concentrated upon design and production.
1962, With the passing of changing and difficult years the sale of the craft in which the brothers excelled now declined and eventually, after the death of Frank, its production ceased to be a commercial proposition. Thomas survived his brother by some years but on his retirement during 1962 disposed of the remaining assets of the business to a Newcastle-on-Tyne company. (see agreement)
1967, Continuing under the same name snd address under new management the business recovered considerably, but now producing the more conventional type of leathergoods on general demand. In 1967 the business was acquired by the Jennings-Skan partnership.
1979, Some twelve years later owing to age and impaired health and after ensuring the continued employment of the staff elsewhere, the partners ceased trading, disposed of all assets and lease of premises and finally the original enterprise of the late Thompson brothers closed down on 31st December, 1979.
