Administrative / biographical background

The Lancashire and Cheshire Association for the Abolition of the State Regulation of Vice began in 1894 as the Manchester and District Association for the Abolition of State Regulation of Vice. It had the status of a committee of the British Commission for the Abolition of the State Regulation of Vice in India and throughout the British Dominions, formerly the British, Continental and General Federation for the Abolition of Government Regulation of Prostitution. Until 1921 it operated as the Manchester and District Association which was formally closed at a meeting in January 1923. However, some members believed that there was a continuing need for the organisation, due to the continuation of the state regulation of prostitution in India and therefore the organisation was revived under the name of the Lancashire and Cheshire Association in October of the same year with Alison Neilans as secretary. It continued its work until March 1939 when its activities came to an end.
