1224. Navy Steamer Pluto (SF & SG). Mar., Apr. 1831, May 1838. 11 items.
Two 50 horse power side lever boat engines, with 39½ inch cylinders, 3½ foot strokes.Midship section of the boat and engines, section at aft bulkhead showing coal boxes and aft blow out cocks and pipes, longitudinal section of the engine room and plan of the engine deck beams, plan of the engine sleepers and platforms, fronts of coal boxes,- reverse drawings made in the London office; sections and plan of boiler - partially coloured original and reverse drawings made in the London office (drawings also used for boilers for Columbia and Tartarus); sketch for alteration of shafts (partially coloured) - reverse drawing made in the London office. Only the coal box drawing bears a letter code.
Also the following later items: new coal boxes for repair of May 1838; emptying pipes etc. - partially coloured original and partially coloured reverse drawings, May 1838. All these drawings bear letter codes.Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 845. Catalogue of Old Engines p. 316.
For H. M. Navy. The engines were made in 1826 but not appropriated to the Pluto until 1830. In Mar. 1832 Pluto was about to proceed to the African coast, her first service. According to the Catalogue of Old Engines she was armed with two long 18 pounder guns for the suppression of pirates on the Bahama Banks. Pluto was broken up in 1861.
