The family firm was William & John Dawson and was created out of the ruins of the Gradwell contracting business in 1895. The original sawmill was Gradwell's Dalton Road brickworks in Union Street but after a fire in 1920 we moved to Hibbert Road. The site was sold in 1977 and is now occupied by Jewson.
This site gave a good view of the activities at the north end of Barrow Central Station hence my observations of LMSR No 1. We had a private siding which was reached by setting back down the up main to the Hawcoat Branch Ground Frame. This access was closed in the early 1960's as part of the purge on private sidings.
