Description

Republic of Ireland, southwest coast: County Cork

'A Trigonocatenary Survey of Crook-haven [Crookhaven]'. Includes two views: 1) 'Brow Tower 3 times its own apparent breadth open to ye [the] northward of Mr O'driscoll's house...Drawn at A at half ebb'; 2) 'Learmcon tower just in sight to ye [the] Southward of Rock Island...Drawn from ye [the] Rock at low water'. Includes 1 diagram: 1) 'Diagram for finding ye [the] height of Station D explained in remark book'. Survey shows coastline, hydrography, anchorages, jetties, topography, settlements, buildings (including custom house and officers houses), land marks, sight lines, remarks and explanatory key. Includes decorative cartouche. Includes illustrations of ships. Colour manuscript. North point with magnetic north variation (1817). Scale: 10.8 inches to 1100 fathoms; 10.1 inches to 1 mile. Surveyed 'by Captain Martin White Royal Navy taken during ye [the] sojournment of ye [the] Shamroc [Shamrock] at ye [the] anchorage'. Recieved by the Hydrographic Office prior to 1826, according to Lieutenant Alexander Becher
