In 1917 building began on 62 houses to accommodate the workmen of the Iron and Steelworks of Dorman Long , approved by the Minister of Health as eligible under the Housing and Town Planning Act for Government Loan and Subsidy; Charles Dorman (Chairman Committee), Mr Arthur Dorman (Vice Chairman of the Committee), the Society was Registered on December 16th 1919. The Construction of the Garden Village known as Dormanstown consisted of 12713 acres; Further expansion with a second wave of 150 houses. The first 300 houses built were designed by the Architects Stanley Davenport Adshead, Stanley Ramsey, and Professor Patrick Abercrombie. The building of Dormanstown Village was completed in 1920 and had enough housing for 342 families. Shares allotted (20 Shares Each) to Mr Charles Dorman, Lt Col Maurice Lowthian Bell, Mr Arthur Dorman, Mr T.D.H. Stubbs, Mr J.A. Russell, Mr L Ennis, Lt Col H Fawcus; Paid Dorman, Long and Co. Ltd a sum of £5 per cent on the rentals collected annually by the company on behalf of the society.
