Died on the 18th of December 1918 aged 22
Charles Eric Smart Loxley was born at Surbiton on the 7th of March 1896 the son of Herbert Charles Loxley, a gentleman, of Surbiton and Frances Emily Bayliss (formerly Loxley) of 15 Loundoun Road St John’s Wood in London.
He was educated at Lancing College where he was in Heads House from January 1910 to July 1912. He was in the Swimming Team in 1911 and 1912 and was Captain in 1912. He was a Sergeant in the Officer Training Corps.
On the outbreak of war he enlisted in the Middlesex Regiment and was commissioned as a Probationary 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd Public School Battalion, Royal Fusiliers on the 27th of October 1914.
He transferred to the Machine Gun Corps with the rank of Lieutenant on the 29th of May 1916.
He was promoted to Lieutenant on the 25th of June 1918 to rank from the 1st of December 1916 and was serving with the Essex Regiment at the time.
He served in France, Macedonia and Palestine and was mentioned in despatches twice.
He died at a the 88th General Hospital in Cairo.
He is commemorated on the Eastbourne war memorial and on the memorial at Hove Library in Sussex.
His mother applied for his medals in November 1920.
He is buried at Cairo War memorial Cemetery Row Q Grave 195;Other Notes: LOXLEY, Captain, CHARLES ERIC SMART, Mentioned in Despatches, Essex Regiment attd. Machine Gun Corps (Inf). Died of pneumonia 18th December 1918. Age 22. Son of Frances Emily Bayliss (formerly Loxley), of 15, Loudoun Rd., St. John's Wood, London, and the late Herbert Charres Loxley. Q. 195. Cairo War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
