Custodial history

In 1965, under the London Government Act, 1963, Surbiton became part of the London Borough of Kingston upon Thames, and its records were transferred to the Guildhall, Kingston.

Administrative / biographical background

Surbiton was part of the ancient Parish of Kingston-upon-Thames. The history of self government in Surbiton begins with the Surbiton Improvement Act, 1855, which set up an Improvement Commission. In December 1894, this became the Urban District Council which in its turn became the Borough of Surbiton in 1936.
