Inspeximus dated 13 June 35 Henry VIII (1543) tested by Thomas, Duke of Norfolk, Treasurer, of: 1. Exchequer record Michaelmas a. 33 (1541) Roll 35 [L.] T.R. Writ dated 12 May a. 33 (1541) to the sheriff of Sussex to distrain on John Castelman, holder of a rent of £31. 2 s. 7¼ d. parcel of the fee farm of Chichester, which he recovered of Thomas Maners, Earl of Rotelond, according to Exchequer Memoranda Trinity a. 28 (1536) roll (blank). John Sakevile, esq., sheriff, returned it endorsed that Castelman had nothing in the rent distrainable. A new writ to distrain on the holders to produce their title, and to furnish their names, he returned endorsed that the Mayor and citizens of Chichester, the holders, had been distrained. (ET MODO) In Michaelmas term they appeared by William Couper their attorney (QUI DICUNT) and say that, having existed as a corporation time out of memory, they were recognized as such by letters patent of 3 Sept. 30 Henry VI (1451) (QUAS QUIDEM) confirmed by letters patent of 6 Nov. 18 Henry VIII (1526). (ET QUOAD). Before John Castelman, Thomas Maners, Earl of Rotelond, was seised of the rent, and John Castelman, with John Hardeham, Robert Boywer, William Bradebridge, John Molens, Ellis Bradeshawe, Austin Cresweller, and William Lane recovered it of him in Easter term 28 Henry VIII (1536) by writ of entry on disseisin in le post. (CUIUS QUIDEM). By writing dated 6 June 28 Henry VIII (1536), produced, Hardham and the others quitclaimed the rent to Castelman; (VIRTUTE) and he by charter dated 18 May 32 Henry VIII (1540), produced, granted it to the Mayor and citizens of Chichester. (DOMINUS REX) By Act of the Parliament of 31 Henry VIII (SUBDITORUM) all bodies corporate were amnestied (ET DICUNT ULTERIUS) from mortmain offences committed before 1 July a. 32. (1540) (ET VISIS PREMISSIS) Therefore they go sine die. 2. Exchequer record Hilary a. 33 (1542) Roll (blank) (L.T.R.). Writ dated 12 Nov. last to distrain on the Mayor and citizens of Chichester as holding the precinct in the City of the late Friars Minor to do homage for it, granted to increase the keep of six poor in an almshouse founded by John Hore, as in pt. i Originalia a. 32 roll 57. Thomas Darell, esq., sheriff, endorsed that they have been distrained (ET MODO). They appeared by William Couper their attorney, and denied liability. (ET VISIS PREMISSIS) Therefore they go sine die. Great Seal in bronze wax, on tag: 'A matter of great Charge belonging too the Cytte.'
