Description (What the record is about)
-
Microfilm copy of a rather disjointed ts account (68pp, beginning on p20) recording his service during the First World War with an unidentified British Army unit and later the Royal Flying Corps in East and North Africa, written by his wife but based upon his own testimony, describing his voyage out via Durban to Mombasa, from where he then travelled to Voi near Nairobi, referring to general Army life and routine patrols, the African countryside, various hunting trips and his award of the Cross of St George for action in a skirmish, before moving to the North African desert where he was involved in armoured car patrols along the border between Libya and Tripoli; he then enlisted in the RFC ca June 1916 and provides a very interesting account of his training as a pilot and experiences with a scout squadron, while referring to the Armistice and his decision as to whether or not to remain in the RAF.
