Airey was born in 1803, the son of Sir George Airey and after education at Sandhurst followed a career in the army. During the Crimean war he held the position of Quartermaster General. He was created a peer in 1876 and died in 1881. Airey's daughter Harriet married Henry Geers Cotterell of Garnons, Hereford
