Uckfield Volunteer Fire Brigade was established in 1868. The first fire station was in the New Town, and had been replaced by one in the High Street by around 1915. Luther Martin is listed as captain in the Kelly's directory of 1899, and he was succeeded by Sydney Roy Hunt by 1907. The brigade lost its volunteer status shortly after the First World War, and came under local authority control; initially Uckfield Urban District Council and then under the Uckfield Parish Council
Bexhill Volunteer Fire Brigade was formed in 1888. It ceased to be a volunteer force in 1892, when it came under the control of Bexhill Local Board, later Bexhill Urban District Council, and Bexhill Borough Council
The fire service was nationalised during the war with the establishment of the National Fire Service in Aug 1941, and was transferred to the control of County and County Borough Councils in April 1948
