ROBERTSON - GLASGOW FAMILY OF HINTON CHARTERHOUSE

The collection consists of the archives of two main estates centred on Hinton House (built c.1690) Hinton Charterhouse, and Halsteads [co.Yorks.] which passed by descent to the present owner via the families of Jones and Foxcroft. The Somerset and Wiltshire property was formerly part of the Hungerford estate and passed from the Harding family to Day family from whom it was acquired by Thos. Jones of Stapleton House [co.Glouc.] in the early 19th century. In addition to the manors of Norton St. Philip and Hinton Charterhouse, which are described in detail in a survey of 1638, 1639, the estate also included the right to the profits of Norton Fair for which "Fair Books", stating fees paid by stallholders survive, 1708-1760 [DD\RG 40-44]. Among the Public Office papers are a petition by the "manufactories" of the Hundred of Wellow for protection against "the mob", 1795 [DD\RG 67] and Defence of the Realm returns for the Hundreds of Bath Forum, Wellow, The Liberty of Hampton and Claverton and Bath City, c.1804 [DD\RG 68-74].

Among the Jones family papers are leases of Screws Hole Glasshouse, within the manor of Blacksworth, Bristol, 1709-1794 [DD\RG 48]. The Yorkshire material from the Foxcroft family consists mainly of estate papers and family settlements and wills, but there is also a subscription for raising a militia for the county, 1745 [DD\RG 113].

The estate was bequeathed to Thomas Jones by Mrs Day in 1846

Returns for the Hundreds of Bath Forum and Wellow, The Liberty of Hampton and Claverton, and Bath City subsequent to the defence of the Realm Acts of 1803. Each parish was required to give lists of men willing to serve in the militia or as Pioneers (labourers) with details of tools and weapons, those aged, infirm or sick requiring assistance in any evacuation, totals of live and dead stock, guides for the army, millers, bakers and barge owners. The returns vary in the amount of detail provided but where names are given as opposed to totals this is indicated by the inclusion in the list of the relevant descriptive heading, e.g. (pioneers), (militia), (sick, etc.)
