Administrative / biographical background

The donor born in 1909, is the son of George and Lilias Green. The father of George was William Oliver Green, a farmer's son from Nantwich. After William had married Mary Mycock, the couple settled in Grindon in Staffordshire, where they ran a small farm and village pub, the Shoulder of Mutton. They had 11 children. The donor's father George, was the 2nd eldest son. He had to leave the village to find work and after various jobs finally settled in Manchester, working for Henry Turnbull in the clothing business. He met Lilias Sinclair at the Longsight Choral Society to which they both belonged and married in 1908. Her family lived in Levenshulme and she worked at C.W.S. Printing Works in Longsight. They set up home at 15 South Avenue, Burnage. The donor had a younger brother Ronald who died when he was 13, and a younger sister Nancy.
