Description (What the record is about)
-
Papers owned by the Frewen family, of Northiam, East Sussex, and Sapcote, Leicestershire, mainly comprising sermons preached in the City of London 1708-19. The sermons were subsequently preached at Sapcote and its neighbourhood 1728-69, probably by John Frewen of Sapcote (1677-1736) and/or his son Thomas Frewen (1708-1791), Rector of Sapcote. According to the the Ven Ernest Sharpe, who presented these papers to Sion College (see Custodial History field), the sermons were preached by an ancestor of his wife, John Frewen, Rector of Northiam. However, although the Frewen clerical dynasty were Rectors of Northiam for more than a century, no John Frewen was Rector of Northiam at the time of these sermons. Rather, since the sermons were later preached at Sapcote, they were probably owned and used at that time by Revd. John Frewen of Sapcote (1677-1736), a son of Thomas Frewen of Brickwall, Northiam, M.P. (1630-1702), and/or by Revd. John Frewen's son Thomas Frewen (1708-1791), Rector of Sapcote. Neither of these however appears to have held a benefice in London. John Frewen (1677-1736) was Vicar of Stanford in the Vale, Berks., 1700-07; Rector of Sidbury, Devon, 1707-18; Rector of Walton on Trent, Derbyshire, 1728-36. Thomas Frewen (1708-1791) was Rector of Sapcote from June 1732, and instituted to Barrow-on-the-Hill, Leics. in 1737. The sermons were possibly acquired by the Frewen family from the original preacher or his family. Since all of the sermons were first preached at St. Nicholas Cole Abbey, the original preacher may have been Walter Wells (d. 1720), Rector of St. Nicholas Cole Abbey 1705-20. Zachariah Wells, thought to have been his brother, was Rector of St. James Garlickhithe 1706-08. Sion L40.2/E88/1. Stitched, without covers. 35 ff. Two sermons on Matthew 6: 34. Preached seven times as a pair of sermons at St. Nicholas Cole Abbey, and St. James Garlickhithe, City of London, 1708-19. Afterwards preached at Sapcote, Leics., 1729 and 1734. Sion L40.2/E88/2. Stitched, without covers. 60 ff. Three sermons on Acts 10: 34-35. Preached three times at St. Nicholas Cole Abbey, twice at St. James Garlickhithe, and once at St. Laurence Pountney, City of London, between 1708 and 1718. Afterwards preached at Sapcote, Leics., 1731. Another copy of the sermons is written in another hand on the versos of leaves; this copy was preached between 1752 and 1769, including at Aston and Sharnford, Leics. (see f. 54v). Sion L40.2/E88/3. Stitched, without covers. 22 ff. Sermon on I Corinthians 1: 26.
