North-East Durham Joint Town Planning Committee

Established under the Town and Country Planning Act, 1932 to draw up a planning scheme covering the constituent authorities, who were:-

South Shields R.D. (later Boldon UD) Houghton UD

Sunderland RD Hetton UD

Washington UD Jarrow BC

Houghton RD Hebburn UD

Officials of Boldon UD clerked the meetings and held the records. The activities of the Committee were jointly funded by the constituent authorities and Durham County Council. The Committee wound up after the passage of new planning legislation in 1947.

Boldon Urban District Council was formed on 1 April 1936 under the County of Durham Review Order, 1936. It consisted of parts of Boldon Colliery Civil Parish, Boldon Civil Parish, Monkton Civil Parish and Whitburn Civil Parish, all formerly parts of South Shields Rural District. During the next 35 years the area of the Urban District was gradually diminished by transfers to South Shields County Borough in 1951, Sunderland County Borough in 1967 and Jarrow Municipal Borough also in 1967.

Boldon U.D.C. was abolished on 1 April 1974 under the provisions of the 1972 Local Government Reform Act. Its area became part of South Shields Metropolitan Borough Council.

Records of South Shields Rural Sanitary Authority and South Shields Rural District Council have been included with the records of Boldon U.D.C. as there is no discernible administrative break between Boldon and these predecessor authorities.

South Shields Rural Sanitary Authority was set up in 1872 under the provisions of the 1866 Public Health Act. Under the Local Government Reform Act of 1894 it was abolished and replaced by a Rural District Council with enhanced powers. Over the next 40 years the Rural District was gradually diminished by the transfer of parts of it to South Shields County Borough (1901 and 1921), and Sunderland County Borough (1927).

On 1 April 1936 the Rural District was abolished and the area split between South Shields County Borough, Felling Urban District, Hebburn Urban District, Jarrow Municipal Borough and the newly-created Boldon Urban District.
