The ancient parish of St. Mary, the civil parish and the Urban District (until the inclusion of Wick in 1901) all covered substantially the same area. The proprietary chapel of St. John within the parish was opened in 1877 and closed in 1948. The ecclesiastical parish of St. James was formed in 1928
