INTRODUCTION
The records in the following list were deposited in the Hampshire Record Office in April and June 1991 by the Trustees of St. John's Winchester Charity. Before deposit, they were kept in an iron chest and a locked wall cupboard in the Boardroom at St. John's Hospital. The records comprise title deeds, leases, minutes, accounts, an enrolment book and a wide variety of administrative papers. The documents relate not only to the Winchester property of the charity but also to properties elsewhere in Hampshire and Wiltshire. The Table of contents indicates their arrangement. Apart from the deeds and leases, most of the records post-date 1829, when the property of St. John's Hospital was transferred from the Winchester Corporation to Trustees, following a lengthy Chancery lawsuit.
The earlier records of St. John's Hospital were retained by the Corporation in 1829. These are listed as W/H1. The Introduction to that list gives a brief description of the records and also an historical account of St. John's Hospital. A full history of the Hospital, by B. Carpenter Turner is forthcoming.
Other records in the City archives are intimately related to the records listed here. In particular the City leases listed as W/F3 include many St. John's Hospital leases and equally there are some City leases in this collection. Cross-references have been given in this list where relevant.
