Description (What the record is about)
-
This small but important collection includes 37 files produced by the Governor of Burma's staff and advisers during their wartime exile in Simla, and afterwards in Rangoon following the Government of Burma's return in 1945. Most of the files cover the years 1942-46 and emanate from the offices of the Governor's Secretary, Publicity Adviser, and Personal Representative to South East Asia Command (all three posts being held by T L Hughes in this period), and from the office of the Governor's Counsellor (Sir R M MacDougall and C B F Pearce). Some of the papers were used by F S V Donnison in his official history 'British Military Administration in the Far East, 1943-46' (London, 1956). On their subsequent transfer to the India Office Records, certain Foreign Office Research Department records were added, mainly comprising regular intelligence reports on Burma compiled during and immediately after the war, and Inter-Services Topographical reports by South East Asia Command. A number of files deal with the incorporation of the Burma National Army led by Bogyoke Aung San into the regular Burma Army.
