Description

A pink tulip. Mughal, c.1660. Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807. Inscribed above in Persian: 'gujari' (referring to the recto). Gouache with gold; on an album leaf with gilt-sprinkled pink border and pale yellow outer margin. 139 by 79 mm; page 376 by 254 mm. Reverse: a miniature of a musician. The central stem bears an opened bloom and an opening bud, the thick pointed leaves are pale green. A butterfly is on the right; gold background.
