Administrative / biographical background

After presentation (by the patron) and admission (the bishop's acceptance of the candidate) the rector or vicar was given possession of the spiritualities of the benefice by institution by the ordinary. If the bishop himself was patron, in full right or by lapse, he instituted without previous presentation, which act was called collation. In the case of a perpetual curacy the bishop's licence admitted the clerk to both spiritualities and temporalities without institution or induction
