Description

Survey volume MM6 is the sixth in the series of thirteen 'MM' volumes, which covers various preferments, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation.; The volume covers the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed Land Agents, Messrs. Cluttons. The preferments in this volume include the following: Canterbury Chapter Estates commuted to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 29 September 1861 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 8 August 1862 and 15 August 1879, 17 August 1894, 22 May 1896 and 12 August 1902 (dates published in the London Gazette by Orders in Council); the Llandaff Bishoprick Estates on 16 December 1882 (effective date); the Exeter Bishoprick Estates, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners as follows: Manor of Burneyre on 14 August 1849 (date published in the London Gazette) by Order in Council; part of the Manor of Lanwhitton (date published in the London Gazette on 18 December 1857 by Order in Council) and 18 September 1869 by vacancy; the Lincoln Chapter Estates transferred by commutation to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 25 March 1869 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 8 February 1870; the Lichfield Chapter Estates commuted to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 25 March 1876 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 7 July 1876; and the Hereford Chapter Estates transferred by conveyance on 1 December 1852 (Pencoyd Parish ) and on 7 August 1862.; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as it was the most comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent and condition of the preferments that had been transferred. ; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports.; However, it is important to mention that a portion of some of these estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners were re-endowed back to the Ecclesiastical Corporations as follows: Canterbury Chapter Estates 29 September 1861 were re-endowed back to the Ecclesiastical Corporation on 1 April 1866 (date effective), which was published in the London Gazette on 10 August 1866; Lincoln Capitular Estates, which were probably re-endowed back to the Ecclesiastical Corporation (date unknown), as some of these estates were subsequently transferred back to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners as Chapter Late Permanent Estates on 24 June 1935 (effective date), published in the London Gazette by Order in Council on 14 June 1935; Lincoln Capitular Estates, which were probably re-endowed back to the Ecclesiastical Corporation (date unknown), as some of these estates were subsequently transferred back to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners as Chapter Late Permanent Estates on 24 June 1935 (effective date), published in the London Gazette by Order in Council on 14 June 1935; and Hereford Chapter Estates, which were probably re-endowed back to the Ecclesiastical Corporation (date unknown), as some of these estates were subsequently transferred back to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners as Chapter Late Permanent Estates on 25 March 1938 (effective date), published in the London Gazette by Order in Council on 31 December 1937.; The volume also has added annotations often regarding the disposal of property or land since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporates later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume includes: the county of Herefordshire, parishes of Pencoyd and Upper Bullinghope; the county of Staffordshire, parish of Norton Canes; the county of Lincolnshire, parish of Great Carlton; the county of Radnorshire, parishes of Bishton, Wilcrick and Llanmartin; the county of Monmouthshire, parishes of Llandewi-Vach, Matherne and St. Arvans; the county of Kent, parishes of Old Romney, St. Mary, Appledore, Brenzett, Warehorne, Brookland, Ivychurch, Ebony, Fairfield, Stone, Snaregate, Preston-next-Faversham and Holy Cross; and the county of Cornwall, parishes of Ruan Lanihorne, Philley [Philleigh or Filley], Gerrans and St. Just.
