Description

Steam Boat Engines (17 items).

1188. Sir J. W. Lubbock & Co., Cadiz Steamer No. 1, Hercules (JN & JO). Jul.-Sep. 1844, Jul. 1846, Nov. 1850. 17 items.
Two 20 horse power oscillating engines, with 27 inch cylinders, 2½ foot strokes.

Section of the engine room and plan of the deck, plan of the engines and boiler (coloured), cross-section of the boat and engines (with original drawing) - reverse drawings made in the London office; copper boiler - partially coloured original and partially coloured reverse drawings made in the London office; "suggestion for the alteration of 20 horse oscillators" - partially coloured drawing made in the London office; steam and feed pipes - partially coloured drawing; plan of working gear; memorandum of details of the engines including extracts from correspondence; tracing of situation of blow off pipes; sketch of situation of bilge pump; note of plates needed for copper chimney. All the drawings except the first and the last 4 items bear letter codes.
Also the following later items: sketch of air pump beam for 20 horse oscillating engines as strengthened for Hercules, Jul. 1846; boiler no. 2 - partially coloured original and partially coloured reverse drawings made in the London office, Nov. 1850; list of plates for Hercules's boiler marked "order from Pascoe Grenfell & Sons, Nov. 1850". All the drawings except the last item bear letter codes.

For Sir John W. Lubbock Bart. & Co. The boat ran between Cadiz in Spain and Port St. Mary. The engines are listed under "Lubbock" in the Drawing Office Index.
