Description

As with his older brother Philip Lyttelton Gell, he had a strong interest in his Franklin heritage. Nearly all the records related to correspondence about Sir John Franklin, including a series of documents collected about his portrait painted in 1824 by Thomas Phillips and the family disputes about its ownership.

Administrative / biographical background

Henry Willingham Gell (1856-1942) was the third son and fifth child of John Philip Gell and Eleanor Isabella (nee Franklin), and a grandson of Arctic explorer Sir John Franklin. He married Edith Georgiana Banks Bradshaw on 19 July 1893. They had two children, Philip Victor Willingham Gell (1897-1970), who inherited Hopton Hall in 1944, and Honor Elizabeth Franklin Gell, who died aged only 7 in 1907.
