The Civil Defence Committee was appointed in 1949 to take over the duties and functions under the Civil Defence Acts, 1937-48. Its predecessor was the Emergency Committee appointed in 1939 to act on behalf of the Council in matters of civil defence. This Committee was dissolved in 1945. The Civil Defence Committee was dissolved in 1968. Under the Local Government Act, 1972, the provision of emergency services became the responsibility of the county council.
