ADMINISTRATION RECORDS

The Asylum was administered by a Committee of Visiting Justices. The draft minutes and presented papers of their meetings survive 1845-1891 (H11/HLL/A/01) with indexes to resolutions (H11/HLL/A/02). Indexes to resolutions of the London County Council Committee minutes also survive (H11/HLL/A/03). The Committee drew up annual statements of account and annual reports which were submitted to the court of Quarter Sessions (H11/HLL/A/04, H11/HLL/A/06, H11/HLL/A/16). Reports from the Asylum officers were submitted to the Committee (H11/HLL/A/07). Returns concerning the numbers of lunatics in the Asylum and still in workhouses or not in any sort of care were returned to the Commissioners in Lunacy (H11/HLL/A/10-11). The Clerk to the Committee of Visitors dealt with correspondence or many matters, and on any aspect of Committee business (H11/HLL/A/01 and H11/HLL/A/13). The Clerk to the Asylum kept the Accounts (see H11/HLL/D) and arranged for the admission of patients (H11/HLL/A/14/001). The Steward controlled the day to day provisioning of the Asylum, which although largely self sufficient still had contracts with local tradesmen for many provisions (H11/HLL/A/14/002 and H11/HLL/A/15/002). The Medical Superintendents dealt primarily with patients' care and records (H11/HLL/B) but corresponded on matters of policy with the Chief Officer of the London County Council (H11/HLL/A/14/003). The Engineer produced plans for any works on the Asylum building (H11/HLL/A/19).
