Description (What the record is about)
-
This exercise book was used to record histories of eminent Romans, including philosophers, and Roman stories. Most accounts are a page long and begin with a title such as: "Of Marcus Cicero" or "Of a painter". It is based on Valerius Maximus' 'Factorum et Dictorum Memoralilium Libri Novem'. It was likely part of the education of the 2nd Earl's son, William Cavendish (1617-1684) whose brother was Charles Cavendish. Inside the cover the name William Cavendish is written several times and the back cover includes "William Devonshire" written in a child's hand- possibly added around the time of the early death of his father. On the outside cover "W. Devonshire and Charles Cavendish his book" is very faintly visible.
Folios 55-87 are blank.
