TURC Management Committee

This folder covers a critical period in the development of TURC. Both routine business papers are included (notices of forthcoming Management Committee meetings, agendas and copy minutes) as well as details of fundamental importance. Records include correspondence of the Chair and Secretary with Management Committee members, trades unions, local councillors, the media etc concerning developments at TURC, disagreements within the Management Committee, and between the Management Committee and staff, The City Council and others. Tension is noted around the degree of TURC's independence (or otherwise) from the Birmingham Trades Union Council. Reluctance of the City Council to continue funding is also detailed. Allegations of impropriety are made against officers of TURC. Reference is made to a City Council Audit investigation into TURC s finances, undertaken at the request of TURC's Secretary. Details of unauthorised approaches by individuals to the University of Warwick with a view to establishing a "new" TURC independent of BTUC are included. Practical matters relating to the move of premises from the MSF premises in Lionel Street to the Union Club, Pershore Road are detailed, as are Council and other concerns at the implications for TURC of this move.

The contents of this file were originally stored in individual plastic pockets. The papers have been removed from these pockets for conservation purposes. However, as certain papers had been removed from their pockets prior to being deposited with the City Archives, the cataloguer has indicated where these empty pockets were in relation to remianing papers in the folder.

Please note that during the currency of this file Mick Rice was simultaneously the Secretary of BTUC, TURC & the Union Club and also a Councillor for BCC (serving as Deputy Chair of the Economic Development Committee).
