Description: These is a variety of papers, the largest quantity of which relate to law suits over the rights of the borough, which were probably, and in some cases, certainly, in the custody of the town clerk. Legal briefs, copies of evidence and pleadings etc in two-dozen municipal law suits 1559-1763; Letter, autograph subscription, of the Privy Council to Mr Justice Clynch concerning the government of the borough, July 1591; Register of horse sales, July 1596; Draft of a royal letters patent for the borough, dating from about 1599, which embodies the provisions later included in the grant of 1604; Letters (2) of King Charles I, autograph superscription, and other papers concerning the nomination of the steward of the borough 1628; Business letters (including three from Tate Wilkinson, lessee of the theatre 1797-1799) and vouchers 1799-1819; Don Navigation Acts, plans and papers 1702-1904
