Description (What the record is about)
-
Tythrop House, Thame
Draft letter. (Swire to Seddon).
"Furley's paying Cannon £100 does not bear on the case, as Furley has for the present to live at Cruckmeole and if he chooses to pay Cannon £100 a year to do all the work in Longden parish that is his look out (I am not approving of his action) but if he can afford to do and his ill health compels it, it does not mean that any successor would follow suit. ... If any fairly strong man was living at Longden I take it that he could easily do the work and get Asterley services taken for £54 10s. per annum ... my wish is for a more workable division of the parish and not to be in the same hugger mugger state we have always been in." Area has a great deal to do with work if a man is going to do his work and visit his parishioners properly. You told me that you could get Asterley taken for £50 a year that your idea of the prayers book was that a clergyman need not unless he was sent for". The schools do not need nor ever had much attention "Longden certainly must go with Pontesbury third portion as it was joined to it some time ago". It should not be necessary to pay a curate £150 for Asterley - any curate could do both Cruckton and Asterley". If my proposition is so preposterous why was £30 named in the first case years ago". If they cannot come to terms about Asterley the only thing is for them to be entirely separated from Pontesbury Parish and for Longden and Asterley to go together "which to my mind is absurd as we shall have to visit the other side of your parish and you will have to visit as far as Welbatch and Moat Hall Farm".
Farley has at present taken Cruckton and the Cruckmeole schools because it suits him and Seddon and he has to pay Cannon £100 for taking the whole of Longden parish and a good part of the third portion.
"Therefore I do not understand what you mean about our asking you to take an extra church and school more than Furley has and to receive £54 10s. i.e. about half the sum for doing double the work".
