Description

Records of West Sussex Record office additional manuscripts

INTRODUCTION

The class of Additional Manuscripts embraces all the smaller gifts and deposits of documents, as distinct from the large family and estate collections such as the Goodwood Estate Archives, or accumulations from solicitor's offices such as the Raper Manuscripts, each of which is catalogued separately and referred to by name. The majority of these documents have been deeds of title, though a healthy balance of a vast range of other material has been documented in these volumes. Over the past 24 years, 21,100 documents have been catalogued and described in twenty six volumes, along the lines indicated in the introduction to the very first volume in November 1956. However, in this the twenty seventh volume, the sheer pressure of the weight of material to be catalogued has meant that in future catalogues of title deeds, instead of being the detailed calendar that has been the practice in the previous volumes, will henceforth appear in summary lists. The accent will be on the property concerned, rather than on the parties involved and the technicalities of the type of legal conveyance being used

Pride of place among the collections listed in this volume must be given to the papers of John Abel Smith (Add Mss 22,243-22,643). These documents are listed in a separate catalogue on A2A as 'Abel Smith papers; under the From Landlord to Labourer' project. The documents range in date from an extract from a Court Roll of 1289 Add Mss 22,964), to correspondence about the Chichester Documentary Research Group, 1977 (Add Mss 22,886). No index has been provided for this volume, as all the relevant details of this and all previous volumes, have been included in the card indexes of persons, places, manors and subjects which are to be found in the Search Room of the County and Diocesan Record Office

Searchers are again asked to exercise care in quoting references and to use the form indicated in the introduction to the first volume
