These are retained at the offices of Dunstable Town Council at Grove House, 76 High Street North, Dunstable, LU6 1LF. A classified list and index compiled by Mr. M.J. Hayward is available in the Record Office searchroom (class 130 DUN). Access to the original files may be arranged with the Town Clerk (telephone Dunstable (0582) 607895).</p> <p>The records of Dunstable Cemetery have also been retained by the Town Council, but the Record Office holds microfiche copies of the burial registers and indexes 1861-1987 (ref: Micf 100). A full list of the surviving cemetery records is also available at the Record Office (ref: CRT 130 DUN 38).</p> <p>A few "stray" records of the Borough Council have been transferred to the County Record Office from the offices of Messrs. Benning, Hoare and Drew. For many years Mr. C.S. Benning, a local solicitor and a partner in the firm, served the Borough Council as Town Clerk. Details of these records will be found in the Record Office catalogues under the reference BH uncat 256-267.</p></span>

Administrative / biographical background

Dunstable became a Municipal Borough in 1864 and retained Borough status until 30th March 1974 when, following Local Government Reorganisation, the present Town Council assumed responsibility for local services and administration.
