This area of Gloucestershire was until 1842 extraparochial. Its inhabitants were subject in certain respects to special jurisdictions, including the Forest Courts, the Mine Law Court, and the Court of St. Briavels. During the 19th Century several Acts of Parliament were passed in order to bring the Forest within normal administration
