Salt Duty

John Harding, master, and William Philp, seaman of sloop 'Price' of Padstow stated on oath that on 14 Dec. last they shipped at Liverpool 29 tons of British fishery salt on which duty paid by Messrs. Blackburn & Co. the shippers. The salt was to be delivered to Padstow on account of Thomas Rawlings, esq. They sailed from Liverpool on 27 Jan. and on night of 27 Jan. they ran into a gale, the vessel took in water, and 5 tons, three hundred, one quarter and 20lbs of salt was lost: Collector of Excise to make allowance to makers of the salt.
