The separation of the affairs of the Aden Settlement from the Aden Protectorate began in 1927 when the responsibility for Protectorate affairs was transferred from the Government of Bombay to the Foreign Office. The arrangement was consolidated in 1928 with the appointment of a Protectorate Secretary. The Protectorate Secretary was appointed by the Colonial Office and was responsible for Protectorate affairs to the Resident under the direct control of the Secretary of State for the Colonies. In 1934, Protectorate was divided into two administrative areas, the Eastern Aden Protectorate and the Western Aden Protectorate. The Protectorate Secretary was also responsible for foreign relations, i.e. relations with neighbouring Arab states. Note: the original ''nine tribes'' of the Protectorate consist of: Subayhi, Aqrabi, Abdali, Hawshabi, Alawi, Amiri, Yafi'i, Fadli and Awlaqi.
