Folios 19-22. Letter from Charles Wright, Clerk to the Guardians of the Mitford and Launditch Poor Law Union, to the Local Government Board, replying to their letter of 11 December 1874 concerning a deficiency in the stock of coals and informs them that the guardians have resolved not to refund the money. He has been asked by the guardians to express their regret that the auditor had not deemed it right to communicate with them on the matter before making his report, as they are of the opinion that the matter may have had a different outcome.
Copy of resolution 14 December 1874, concerning the deficiencies in the stock of coals and the payment subsequently made by Mr Reynolds [Philip John Reynolds] to the Treasurer. It was proposed by William Rix, seconded by Robert Potter that the money be not refunded. An amended proposal by Reverend George Bailey, seconded by Frederick Bond was that the money be refunded as per the suggestion made by the Board. Voting on the matter was a tie at 6 each with the casting vote of the chairman Richard Charles Brown being made in favour of the amendment. Both the proposal and amendment were subsequently withdrawn as J G E Davey had entered the room whilst voting was taking place and his vote would have altered the outcome. A motion was then made by Browne, seconded by Davey to pass the matter to the original committee, this being the visiting committee, who had previously dealt with the matter.
Extract from Mitford and Launditch Poor Law Union Guardians Minutes. On 21 December 1874, the visiting committee decided on repayment of the sum.
