Description (What the record is about)
-
The main group of deeds in this small collection relate to the part of the Nowers Estate in Wellington which was acquired by John Pope in 1818 and which can be identified as Lower Nowers Farm. The Pope connection with the area continued to relatively recent times, the donor being the daughter of the last John Pope of Wellington. In the late 18th century the larger Nowers estate had belonged to John Southerton, who also for a few years owned the manor of Wellington Borough, but the estate was broken up after he was declared bankrupt in c.1799.
Nowers House had probably also belonged to Southerton and may be the house excepted in the 1807 deed [DD\WTN 1], but the only papers definitely to be associated with this house are the letters from the time of the Were/Cookson sale [DD\WTN 8; confirmed by land tax assessments and tithe apportionment].
