Description (What the record is about)
-
This collection includes title deeds and estate papers, mainly relating to the Drake family's Bucks estate at Shardeloes, Amersham, though including some out-county material, eg Lincolnshire. It also includes papers relating to the building of the family seat at Shardeloes in the 18th century and a drawing and contract for a monument by the sculptor Peter Scheemakers. Because of the Drake family's influence over the market town and parliamentary borough of Amersham, the papers include material on the history of the town, eg. the almshouses and work house, parliamentary elections, the market house. Family correspondence includes a series of 21 letters from William Drake and 9 from his tutor to his father describing the course of his Grand Tour in 1768-1769. These letters are not described individually in the catalogue, however.
