Mr. A. B. Beresford-Jones (1881-1974) first came to Canterbury in 1917 when he was stationed in the city during the war. He originally worked for the hospital only in his spare time, but was appointed honorary surgeon in 1918.
Mr. Beresford-Jones had a special interest in orthopaedic surgery and created one of the first fracture clinics in Britain. He not only worked at Kent and Canterbury Hospital, but also served Whitstable and Tankerton and St. Augustine's Hospitals.
During World War II, Mr. Beresford-Jones took over the work of Mr. Cassidi [see MH/T4/Kc 2], a fellow surgeon, and was appointed Chairman of the Medical Board for the duration of the war.
He later became an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, retiring in 1947.
