Gallantry Notes: MC: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during recent operations. When his company commander and second-in-command were wounded , he assumed command of the company, visited all the guns, arranged ammunition supply and reorganised everything. During a withdrawal he collected all available men and fought as a rearguard until the next position was reached. By his courage and cheerfulness he set a fine example to his men.;

A Gallanl Officer. Sec.-Lieut. Edgar Oliver (M.G.C.). 7 Worlley Avenue. Swinton has been notified
that he has been awarded the Military Cross for gallant conduct in action on April 4 at Villers-
Bretonneaux (Somme area). During the action referred to he suffered a severe injury to his foot, and
has since been in hospital in Oxford. At present be is home on leave. He had been in action about
twelve months, and had seen particularly heavy fighting since the battle of Cambrai. Prior to that he
was wounded last September in Flanders.. He is the first Swinton soldier to win the Military Cross.
Before joining the Army he was an accountant in Sheffield, and formerly was on the staff of Mr Dennis
Wood, of Mexboro' He enlisted in the Army Pay Corp,, and was transferred to the M.G.C. on receiving
his commission. (South Yorkshire Times & Mexborough and Swinton Times 25/5/1918);
