Description (What the record is about)
-
The 2 school letters patent and one early deed [H1/1-3 below] are kept flat in special cases, while the other documents are in a tin deed-box, all in the headmaster's study. The writing on many of them, particularly the legal proceedings, has become very faint or even disappeared due to immersion at the time of the flood in 1932. The late Mr. E.N.Nason in his anonymous History of Nuneaton Grammar School by an Old Boy, Nuneaton 1936, says (p.ix)...." I started on this very interesting work just before the disastrous flood of 1932. It is most fortunate that I had, in consequence, removed out of the danger zone the chief documents and records, including the Charters, from which this history is compiled. They would otherwise have been almost completely destroyed. Even as it was a number of papers of secondary importance including many receipted bills and old depositions, of the existence of which was not then aware, were overwhelmed and lay under water for some time. The result was that they were rendered almost illegible." Some of these faded documents have pencil endorsements made before 1932 which give an idea of the contents, but for the matters in dispute in the legal cases reference has simply been made to the appropriate chapter in Mr.Nason's book, partly because the very involved arguments are there concisely stated, and partly because some of the documents appear to have been more legible at the time when he worked on them than they are today.
