- These records were created by the commission but there are no records for who deposited them at the Church of England Record Centre, or when this happened. At CERC they were grouped with other Archbishops' Commissions to form the artificial fonds CERC: AC. These catalogue entries were migrated from the records management sytem in September 2012 and the records moved to Lambeth Palace Library when the two institutions combined in 2021.The fonds used to have the reference AC/1966/2.

The Commission was appointed in 1966 following the suggestions of the Archbishops' Commission on Crown Appointments being rejected by the Church Assembly. It met on 29 occassions before publishing their report in 1970.Their terms of reference were:"To make recommendations as to the modifications in the constitutional relationship between Church and State which are desirable and practicable and in so doing to take account of the current and future steps to promote greater unity between the Churches."
Initially the Commission was chaired by Rev. Professor Owen Chadwick, with Charles Gordon-Lennox, Earl of March and Kinrara as the Vice-Chairman. In October 1969 he became the acting Chairman. Christopher P Hill was the Secretary.
The commission created working parties on the following subjects:- Seal of Confessional- Administration and Property of the Church- Social Research Project- Electoral Systems- Monarchy Committee- Control of Worship- Establishment
