Administrative / biographical background

Arthur Robert Thompson (1890-1939) was born in India and educated in Walthamstow. He worked in business in the City of London, and served in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve during World War I. After the war he became an Inspector of Taxes for the Inland Revenue. Throughout his life, Thompson was an keen observer of the animals and plants of the English countryside. He lived in Essex, Hertfordshire and Surrey, and filled a series of notebooks with his detailed observations at all thes localities. He was a skilled photographer, and illustrated his two best known books, Nature by Night and Nature by Day, himself.
