Description (What the record is about)
-
A large number of vouchers were not in their original bundles when deposited in the East Sussex Record Office, and for those of the 17th and 18th centuries an attempt has been made to group them in their original form according to the year of account and the entry in the account books (RYE/60). It is not certain how far the special groups relating to the Court Hall, Bridge and Wharf (RYE/70/1-3) are the result of later sorting. The 19th-century vouchers were in many cases in considerable confusion and the subject groups (RYE/70/4-10) are the result of resorting. In addition, prior to deposit, vouchers relating to inns and innkeepers, and the town clerk's bills, had been extracted, and this artificial grouping has been kept (RYE/70/12-52).
As well as vouchers for payments made by the Chamberlain, the class includes copy receipts for sums paid to him.
