A Local Board for East Grinstead was formed in 1884 probably under the Local Government Act, 1875. In 1895 the Local Board became an Urban District Council under the terms of the Local Government Acts of 1894.
In 1934 the East Sussex Review Order transferred part of Forest Row called Ashurst Wood to the East Grinstead Urban District and part of the East Grinstead Urban District to Forest Row. See W.S.R.O. MP 1999 for a copy of the East Sussex Review Order.
