1144. Holyhead Packet Meteor (XX & XY). Aug.-Oct., Dec. 1820, Jun., Dec. 1821, Jan. 1822, Jan. 1825. 15 items.
Two 30 horse power side lever boat engines, with 31½ inch cylinders, 3 foot strokes.Sections and side view of the boat, Aug. 1820, marked "Copied from Mr. W. Evans' drawings"; sections and side view of the boat, Sep. 1820, marked "signed W. Evans" (these 2 drawings are similar to the "draft" drawings in the Steam Boat Box).
Outside view and plan of the top of the boiler, section and plan of the boiler, longitudinal section of the boiler - coloured reverse drawings; section of the boat and engines and plan of the sleepers - reverse drawing; plan of the engines and boiler, side view of engine and section of boiler - coloured reverse drawings; sketch of headstock frames. Several of these drawings bear letter codes.
Also the following later items: sketches of new paddle wheels by William Creighton, Dec. 1821; sketch of crank, Jan. 1822; plans and sections of new boiler - 2 partially coloured reverse drawings made in the London office marked "Scheme No. 1" and "Scheme No. 2", plan and sections of "second boiler" - 2 partially coloured original drawings made in the London office, Jan. 1825. The drawings of the boiler "schemes" bear letter codes.Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 726. Catalogue of Old Engines p. 312.
For H. M. Post Office, Holyhead station. The boat was referred to as "Post Office No. 2" before being named Meteor. She worked between Holyhead and Howth. She later moved to the Milford station, and then to the Weymouth station. She was wrecked at Portland on 23 Feb. 1830. She was replaced by the Flamer [see Portfolio 5/1136].
Note that Boulton Watt & Co. provided the engines for a Navy boat also called Meteor. The Navy boat was usually referred to as the "Navy Meteor" to distinguish the two.See also: 4/95 (Engine Order Book No. 9).
