Description (What the record is about)
-
Survey volume M5 is the fifth in the series of eight 'M' volumes, which covers the Ecclesiastical Corporations of Gloucester and Bristol, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation. ; This volume covers the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed land agents, Messrs. Cluttons. The preferments in this volume concern the Gloucester Chapter Estates, which were transferred by commutation to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on the following dates: 1 January 1855 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 17 July 1855 by Order in Council; and on 25 March 1894 (effective date) by way of exchange, which was published in the London Gazette on 31 July 1894 by Order in Council. ; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as the survey reports gave a comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent, condition and value of the preferments being transferred. ; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports. ; However, it is important to mention that a portion of the Gloucester Capitular Estates were re-endowed back to the Ecclesiastical Corporation as follows: 1 January 1866 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette 3 July 1866; and by exchange on 25 March 1894 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 31 July 1894. ; The volume also has added annotations often regarding the disposal of property since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporates later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume includes: the county of Gloucestershire, parishes of Rudford, Sandhurst, Gloucester St. Mary de Lode, Gloucester St. Catherine, Taynton, Tibberton, Marston, Upton St. Leonards, Upleadon and Withington; the county of Wiltshire, parishes of Sherston Magna and Alderton otherwise Aldrington; the county of Buckinghamshire, parish of Great Marlow; and the county of Herefordshire, parishes of Ullingswick, Pencombe, Yarkhill, Stretton, Grandsome, Stoke Edith, Ashperton and Much Cowarne.
