Description

This collection consists of the personal and business papers of Charles Watson Mill, dramatic author and proprietor and owner of the Theatre Royal, Royal Leamington Spa. It includes plays in typescript, part-books and letters and documents relating to family and business matters during Mill's tenure of the Theatre Royal, and covering the years 1910-1934.

Administrative / biographical background

Charles Watson Mill (d 1933) dramatist and theatre owner. As a dramatic author, Mill's works included: 'The Eve of Her Wedding', 'A Warning to Women', 'A Wrecker of Men', 'The Seal of Silence' and 'The Eternal Flame'. He formed a theatre company, the Celebrated Players Ltd in 1919, and was lessee and later owner of the Theatre Royal, Leamington Spa. The theatre company was wound up on his death and the theatre was sold. The theatre building - which was erected in 1882 - was sited in Regent Grove, Holly Walk. (Source: items in the collection).
