Description (What the record is about)
-
Book of Accompt of the expenses of Lady Arabella Stuart, kept by Hugh Crompton her Steward; 22 Aug. 1609-29 Mar. 1611, 23 Nov. 1613-25 June, 1614.
The volume begins with her expenses on a journey from London to Melwood in Yorkshire and back, 22 Aug.-10 Oct. 1609, after which she was resident in and near London. On 9 July 1610 is a reference to her committal to the custody of Sir Thomas Parry [at Lambeth] for having secretly married William Seymour (see above, SE/VOL. VI.). In Nov. 1613 until the end of the volume she is spoken of as being in the Tower, where she was imprisoned after her attempted escape to the continent in June, 1611. In the latter part of the volume are several entries of money paid to the use of William Seymour.
On a fly-leaf at the end (f.70b) is the note, in Crompton's hand "The 22th of June 1610 about 4 in the morninge My Lady was maried at Greenewiche to Mr William Seymour", followed by the names of seven witnesses including "Mr Blauge [Blague] the minister" and himself. Below are notes of the committal of W. Seymour to the Tower on 8 July and of "My Lady to Sir Tho. Parryes" on the following day:
