George Brassington (b.1905) was Assistant General Secretary of the National Union of Railwaymen between 1958-1970.
He began work on the North Staffordshire Railway as a parcels van boy at Stoke on Trent in 1919, and was made redundant after the 1926 General Strike. Between 1926-1928 he worked on a variety of jobs (including porter, parcels porter, passenger shunter and signal lamp man) in North Staffordshire, Llandudno Junction and West Hendon, before returning to the North Staffordshire area in 1928 to become a signalman.
George Brassington was Secretary of Newcastle (Staffordshire) NUR branch between 1934-1945 and a member of the LMS Sectional Council from 1940. He was elected as NUR Area Organiser in 1945 (working in Nottingham district) and was Assistant General Secretary between 1958-1970. He also served as a member of the North Midland Regional Board for Industry, the National Economic Development Council (NEDC) for Movement of Exports, and the Home Office Committee for Crime Prevention.
